“While certainly inspired by Alice Coltrane,

Muhammad brings her own unique touch to the strings,

as well as a contemporary melodic style that is exacting,

whether she is working solo or accompanied.”

St. John Coltrane Church - Sonic Ascension Service at Grace Cathedral

Friday, July 21 @ 7:00PM (PDT, UTC-07)Fri, Jul 21 @ 7:00PM (PDT, UTC-07)

Grace Cathedral , 1100 California Street, San Francisco, CA 94111

St. John Coltrane Church - Sonic Ascension Service at Grace Cathedral The Saint John Coltrane Church of San Francisco invites you to celebrate the 56th year of Ascension of Saint John Coltrane and the 64th year of Ascension of Our Lady Day at Grace Cathedral on July 21, 2023.July 17th is the day that both the singer Billie Holiday and the musician John Coltrane transitioned from this earth. Billie Holiday left in 1959 and John Coltrane followed eight years later in 1967. Canonized by the African Orthodox Church in 1982, John Coltrane, saxophone player and composer, was born September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, NC. In his short 40 years, Saint John Coltrane released 38 albums, including A Love Supreme and such individual masterpieces as Giant Steps and Equinox. Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan in Philadelphia and was joyfully nicknamed “Lady Day” by fellow musician Lester Young. Before her transition, Lady Day was a powerful influence on jazz and her searing rendition of the song “Strange Fruit” left an indelible imprint on the consciousness of the nation that continues to move our spirits today. Her spiritual vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a novel use of phrasing and tempo. Each year, the Saint John Coltrane Church celebrates the ascension of these American musical icons. Inspired by Duke Ellington’s “Concert of Sacred Music” performed at Grace Cathedral in 1965, our theme remains, as St. John Coltrane said it: "The love that holds the universe together."By proclamation of former Mayor Willie Brown and Mayor London Breed, July 20 is Saint John Coltrane Day in the city of San Francisco.
